hi cuttibebe,
i found your blog from the scrolling around the muse's page and i must say i enjoyed reading it, don't take it the wrong way though, i'm no stalker haha. anyways, in a nut shell, a few months back i was talking to my bf about wanting to move to NYC and find a job there, but he thinks that it's much harder to find a job and live comfortably in NYC than in Toronto since rent is high, no job connections, family, etc..(he thinks Hong Kong is the way to go)
i'm a fresh graduate with a BA in history and being a white washed chinese girl, i get the impression from people that it's easier to just stay in good ol' multi cultural Toronto, totally BORING here with a lack of a buzzing city goodness.. do you think NYC is as glamourous as say..sex and the city puts it? or is it really much harder to make a living with anything that revolves around a BA history? (keeping in mind that i have no clue what to do with the BA, except no teaching) any suggestions? errrm..as for experience, i'm quite good a making a triple grande non fat latte lol. thanks a bunch!
that lip color looks amazing on you.
Fresh and clean look. Your skin is amazing by the way, it must be flawless.
gorgeous!
Hi Millie! Welcome! Pls don't think you are a stalker. You can't beat me in stalking people and the worse thing is I barely ever leave comments (lazy). =P
Have I spoken to you before? I remember someone else was telling me they were planning on moving to NYC with their boyfriend too. But I could be wrong since there are alot of people want to move to nyc.
Well, let's start by saying Sex and the City chicks must be making BIG BUCKS to be living the way they do. First of all, their apts are at least $3000-4000 a month. You can calculate their salary by adding another $3000-4000 a month to their paycheck. Paying 50% of your pay check for rent in NYC is very very common. So they have to be making $100,000 a year, taking away 25% as their tax, divided by 12, you get their monthly pay check. I say, unless you are in an investment bank or an associate lawyer in one of the big firms, those salaries are hard to make when you are a fresh graduate. Plus, they don't take subways, don't cook, and shop on 5th ave.instead of soho. in NYC, a lunch costs $10 and upward easily, $20 for dinner is common. getting around town, subway is the way to go, but if you live in bklyn, bronx or queens, taking you 45 - 80 mins to get in manhattan is very very common. so technically, that's not really "living in the city", that's like you live in bklyn and come work in the city. hence why people want to be in mahattan, and not bklyn.
I will give you some stats, so maybe you can work that out with your boyfriend about how much you guys need to make in order to live here. a 500 sq. ft. studio on 32nd st and 6th ave is $2500, that's where Macy's is and the apt would have 24 hr security, a gym and concierge. a 500 sq. ft. studio in bklyn is $900, probably the basement of someone's house with your own kitchette and bathroom, quiet suburban town and takes around 1 hour to get into manhattan.
usually young people who live in mahttan room with their friends, say 3-4 of them? in a 2 bedroom apt, the living room is usually squared off with a curtain to make a "3rd bedroom". they'd each pay like $800-$900 but you'd be sharing EVERYTHING. liternally, you just go home to sleep and you do the rest outside.
Buzzling city life, of course, there are endless things to do, as long as you have money. you can join birhram yoga classes, go to events, concerts, the Tribecca film festival, eat out in the village and most of the city is still awake at 11pm, so you will never feel lonely. But then again, it's just you and ur boyfriend, so you need to make sure whatever job it is you r going to take, there are young people you connect with. other wise, it's hard to party it up in the city when you don't know anyone.
finidng a job here.. hmm.. depends on what you do and what you want out of your job. the economy as a whole is pretty whacky now, people getting laid off left and right. But with a BA History, I'm thinking you can work at museums? or news agencies, magazines, or intern for a fashion house? i'd say the pay for all of those jobs are around $35,000 - $40,000 (if you are lucky). or u can try event planning companies (a lot in nyc). my friends working in PR firms and magazine companies are living in the village, paying probably $2000 for rent, BUT their boyfriends are usually in banks, so they make up for the rent. it is possible to find apts in the $1000's, but they are usually walk ups, tiny and older, on the outter skirt of the town (10th ave), not much around.
I'm just running numbers and giving you some of the info i know. But Millie, honestly, you live once and you have to live it the way you want. YES, there will be struggles, there will be times when you wish you were with your family and friends, but you will gain experience that no one have. I believe things will always work out as long as you work hard at it. So if you want to come to NYC and experience the city, then come for a few years, see what it's all about. I have a friend who lived in Boston all her life, she came to NYC and got a job at Derek Lam (fashion house, look it up on eLuxury), and lived in a basement studio in bklyn for 1 year, and she just moved back. she mised her family too much and NYC is too cut throat, it wasn't fun for her anymore. But she loved the city and all of the great places she was able to experience, the museums, the little shops, the events, and all the friends she met.
So you never know what will happen until you try it. who knows, you might like it so much here, you'll make that triple grande non fat latte at your cozy little studio for your boyfriend? lol. can i have one too actually? no foam pls. =)
hope this helps. i will write more about my life later. i gotta run to lunch now~
Stephanie,
I stumbled on your blog from Fei's, and I have to say...I love how candid you are about yourself and your life! It takes cajones, and girl, you've definitely shown that you’ve got them. Fierce, confident, and fabulous—three words I think you embody!!
Anyway, I was reading what you wrote in response to millie about living in NYC. As a transplant to NYC myself, I find myself in that tough position where my job (paralegal at a small law firm) doesn't offer lots of chances to meet people my age. As such, I suffer from a defunct social life, especially compared to the robust one I had back in my collegiate days. Do you have any suggestions about meeting new people besides work? I’d love to know. Thanks a lot!
T
P.S. I am also China-born, Jersey-raised, and working in Manhattan.
hey TN! welcome to the blog! i'm sorry i hope you don't think i'm ignoring you since i haven't responded. the truth is, i've been thinking about writing a post or a video response about my experience. seems like more people are suffering from this "quarter life" crisis than i thought. i barely hang out with any friends since i started working. and the stress of work, lack of interest in my job, and the disoppintment in sociality pushed me over the limit, and i actually suffered from mild depression induced by panic disorder.
it was (and in some way, still is) such a bad experience, that i want to share it with the rest of you in a comprehensive post, so i can shed some light on the many fresh graduates and those seeking the "city life style".
stay tuned! =)
heey cuttibebe,
nope, this was my first time on your blog. i totally didn't expect you to get into detail thanks so much, you're awesome.
anyway i didn't expect the rents to be that high it must have been tough for you to start out by yourself. after reading your respone..i think i'm probably the least prepared person to move to nyc right now as much as i want to, unless of course a fabulous job opportunity came up or if my family is there. hopefully one day i'll be there for a few years to try it out after convincing my bf to move with me lol. and i just noticed that you were planning to post up your experience in nyc so i'm sure i'll get a better feel of how things are there instead of writing another essay here haha. i'm probably not the only one, but being a recent graduate of something so general, i get the feeling that it's so hard to find a good job, considering there are 1000's of other BA's out there. maybe i AM having a mid life crisis...just at 23 lol.
excuse my bad memory, but did you actually work in hong kong or was that a student exchange program? how do you think hong kong compares to nyc?
thanks so much again, you gave me such a better perspective of life in nyc esp since you live there =p who knows..maybe i'll move there and bump into you haha. creepy huh?! lol thanks again!
I have to agree, that lip color does look great on you. :) I never buy Clinique products beside their skincare, but I'm hoping there'll be a GWP soon!
Thanks for the detailed reply Stephanie. Looking forward to your post!
